Don’t let your water heater drain your budget: Energy-efficient water heating for Nevada homes

Water heating is the second-highest energy expense in most homes, accounting for 18% of your utility bill. In Nevada, where hot water use remains high year-round, switching to an energy-efficient system can make a big difference for your wallet.

Traditional water heaters use a lot of energy and can run continuously to keep water hot and ready to use. Energy-efficient heat pump water heaters, on the other hand, use advanced technology to move heat rather than generate it, saving energy and money. These systems can be two to three times more efficient than conventional water heaters.

Nevada residents looking to install a heat pump water heater can take advantage of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) and get up to $2,000 for the cost of the project — an incentive made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act. This law also funded a state-level program that allows homeowners to apply for home electrification upgrades, including heat pumps water heaters. This Home Energy Rebates program will soon be available through the Governor’s Office of Energy and is expected to roll out in 2025.

Through its PowerShift program, NV Energy customers may also take advantage of rebates for qualifying heat pump water heaters and get up to $400 for a qualifying system.

We don’t often think about our water heaters until they stop working. When it’s time to upgrade, it’s essential to know your options for a more energy-efficient appliance and available incentives to save you money in the long run.

How do heat pump water heaters work?

Instead of generating heat directly, heat pump water heaters pull heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to heat water in a storage tank. Think of it like a refrigerator in reverse: instead of expelling heat, it captures it to heat water. The process can be much more efficient than traditional water heaters. Also, many models come with smart controls that help optimize performance and save even more energy.

Heat pump water heaters are significantly more energy-efficient than traditional water heaters, often using up to 70% less energy, resulting in substantial savings on energy bills over the appliance’s lifespan.
